With the publication of Saul Bass: A Life in Film and Design, there's a lot of love out there right now for the big guy. One corner of the web you really need to see is the Movie Title Stills Collection's feature on Bass' film work. Every single credit sequence he worked on was exceptional … with a couple of exceptions. I'm was shocked to see his name pop up during the incredibly pedestrian credits for Big. A great opportunity for an imaginative interpretation of the film's themes, wasted. Still, even legends are allowed to have an off day.
I've yet to see his own stab at film-making, killer ant movie Phase IV, but if the cover of the novelisation is anything to go by, it's a myrmecophobic corker. I think it's free to view on Lovefilm at the moment, so I might wrap my eyes around it soon.
On a related note – could everyone stop using the Bass-mimicking Hitchcock typeface now please? Seeing this replication of hand-drawn text all over the place is getting a bit annoying. It's kind of missing the point, don't you think?
